PE and Sport

Updated March 2017

PE and Sport

We are a happy, energetic school with a clear vision for learning actively and physically. We are an accredited healthy school, teaching children the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices and supporting them in their understanding.

 PE and Sport Funding

Primary schools in England are currently receiving funding to spend on developing PE and sport in school.  Our PE and sport allocation funding for last academic year (2015/16) was £9,225.85.  This academic year we have prioritised 4 key areas for the funding:

Professional coaches and staff up-skilling (30%)

Equipment (10%)

Inter-school Competitions (25%)

After school clubs (35%)

The Impact of PE Funding

This yearly funding has enabled Thorpe Willoughby Primary School to promote and celebrate sport at all levels.

The funding allows us:

* to attend many Inter School Tournaments and competitions, thus increasing participation in competitive school sport.

* to employ professional sports coaches to provide quality and a wider breadth of PE in school that train not only the children, but also upskill the staff.

* to provide after school sports clubs and sporting days (last year 100% of our KS2 children were involved in either an after school/ lunchtime club, an inter school competition or a sports funded day of activities)

With last year’s funding we bought large football nets for KS2 and lots of balls.  For KS1/EYFS we purchased an outdoor balance set and new equipment for outside playtime.

This year, we have already bought 2 large basketball hoops and lots of balls as well as four new gymnastic mats. Our school council/ Sports Organising Crew are going to come up with suggestions from the pupils.  Watch this space….

After School Clubs

We have invested significantly to provide free places for our after school clubs.  Pupils form KS1 and KS2 have benefited, learning new skills and introducing new sports such as Futsal.  So far this year we have the following clubs running:

Autumn term:  football, handball and futsal.

Spring term: futsal, street dance and hockey.

Summer term:  cricket, multi-skills and football.

Play Leaders

Our Year 6 children are involved in a ‘Play Leaders’ scheme. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for our children to plan, organise and deliver games activities for their peers and younger pupils to enjoy.

Our Play Leaders often support play time games and are central to our intra school competitions. This scheme is further developed by many of the high schools.

Inter-school Competitions

We are part of the Selby Sports Cluster and using our Sports Premium Finding we employ a Sports Specialist to organise and run inter-school competitions throughout this academic year.

2016/2017 has been a very successful year so far:

 Community Links

We have close links with many local Sport Clubs and enjoy the benefit of their expertise and coaching.   Children have the opportunity to try these sports and are welcomed to attend these local clubs eg Football, Cricket, Tennis, Rugby, Dance, Cheer Leading.

Bike ability

Children in Y5 and Y6 are given the opportunity to improve their bike safety and their knowledge of road safety.  They take a theory test and develop their road safety skills around Thorpe Willoughby.

The children will be taking to the roads around Thorpe Willoughby next week.  Let’s hope the weather stays dry for them!

Each week we join as a school in an assembly to celebrate children’s sporting achievements inside and outside school and share their shining moments. These are also reflected on our PE display board.
